Basement
Finishing
Do you need a place for the kids to
scatter toys and games, or for the teens to hang out
with their friends watching movies? How about a place
for shooting pool or enjoying state of the art theatre
equipment for “get away from it all” TV viewing?
The lower level of your home may be
the best place to accomplish all of the above activities
and more for the least amount of money. Typically, a
basement can be finished complete from framing to
painting and carpet for between $40 and $50 dollars a
square foot. When you compare that to the cost of adding
on to your home at $150 to $250 a square foot you
realize that the space “down under” is worth taking
a second look at.
The lower level of your home can be
finished as nicely as the rest of the home by
introducing the same materials (wood species in doors,
casing and base board- drywall finish, paint colors and
floor coverings) as used on the main level. Or go for a
completely different aesthetic feel by using different
materials, finishes and styling. Covering ductwork and
pipes are challenging, but can be a place for creative
“coffered” style ceilings and adding other elements
of visual interest. When you finish your basement you
also create energy savings by adding insulation to the
exterior walls before drywall goes on.
Some other current uses of basement
spaces include guest bedroom and bath, in home office
space, craft space, family room, theatre space, exercise
room and wine cellars. Add a gas fireplace or a wet bar
and the comfort and enjoyment increases. There are
limitless ways to make economical use of your lower
level.

basement finished and available for your family’s use
