Take Advantage of Energy Efficiency Tax Credits
If your remodel includes replacing windows or doors, adding
insulation, installing new roofing, upgrading heating or air-conditioning
units, updating the water heater, or installing energy generating
products (such as solar panels, heat pumps, or wind turbines)
the you can take advantage of federal energy efficiency tax
credits through 2010 that will help defray costs and maximize
your remodeling budget while reducing home energy bills.
Always begin your remodeling project with a remodeling professional,
a member of the Remodeler’s Council of Greater Des Moines. These
professionals are held to a strict code of ethics and receive
continuing education. They are also knowledgeable about the
tax credits, and more likely to stay on top of construction
and design trends.
After interviewing remodelers and choosing the one that best
suits your needs, check their references and research their
business through the Better Business Bureau. Next step is talking
over the details of the project and reviewing a contract. Check
the remodelers’ insurance coverage, ask about any warranties
on their work, and know who is responsible for obtaining any
building permits. You will also want to understand the process
for making any change orders after the contract is signed.
